I was able to reproduce the problem with your verbatim minimal example: \starttext \input knuth \placefigure[left]{Cow}{\externalfigure[cow][frame=on, scale=500, orientation=90]} \input knuth \input knuth \stoptext I have uploaded the result here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/rmbsrj The cow gets rotated but protrudes the frame at the top overlaying the text.
