Thank you very much. I replaced
    \usetypescriptfile[type-buy]
with
    \usetypescript [adobekb][\defaultencoding]
which finally worked.

Installing cont-fnt as Hans suggested didn't have any influence at all.

However, now some really strange bug(?) appeared.
\type{\whatevercommand} doesn't work inside \starttabulate ...
\stoptabulate. This is only true for MikTeX, everywhere else it works
OK. \starttabulate and \type{\whatevercommand} both work when they are
used separately, but fail when \type comes inside \starttabulate.

It may be that MikTeX is a bit "old" (27.10.), but there is no newer
version available yet, so I hope that the problem will go away with
the next version.

The problem is caused by the (no longer valid) Palatino => uplXXX
mapping in type-dis.tex (current distributions only ship the URW
metrics under the Adobe name, not using the URW naming).

Those mappings will go away soon, and then this will be no longer
a problem.

Yes, the problem will go away. It was fixed in the 2005.11.24 or so.

Cheers, Taco

The manuals compiled (almost) OK with the stand-alone ConTeXt distr.
However - is there any way to compile them under MikTeX (I have almost
all the packages installed)? I'm completely ignorant about font
issues. I got the error posted below.

(Another problem: The metapost graphic around the chapter names is not
properly scaled here - way too big, but I'll install the new ConTeXt
version first, recompile and then "complain" again.)

Taco, Hans, et al,

I'd like to remind you that this problem (uplr8t) still seems to
exist when I tried compiling the beginner's manual ma-cb-en.

I had to do two things to get ma-cb-en.tex to compile:

1. Make this change to: ma-cb-style.tex:

\startnotmode[atpragma]

     \usetypescript[adobekb][8r,ec]
     \usetypescriptfile[type-buy]
     \usetypescript[palatino][\defaultencoding]
     \setupbodyfont[palatino,10pt]

\stopnotmode

2. Make this change to ma-cb-abbreviations.tex.

\startenvironment ma-cb-abbreviations

\usemodule[abr-01]

there has been troublesome versions (broken) indeed but the 3.33 version
on my machine is ok

I seem to recall similarly trying and failing about 11 months ago, as
well!

I've a working pstoedit from Fink.

BTW, Gerben, your fontforge needs some libs in /lib instead of /usr/
local/lib. I symlinked it, but perhaps your build system is a bit
screwed up? Or is it a problem of the FF sources?

If I recall I looked into pstoedit a while back. The fact that I did
not release a package probably means there were problems getting it
to compile on OS X.

Hans, Gerben,

No pstoedit on my system.

book $ pstoedit
-bash: pstoedit: command not found

Gerben, how should I proceed?

that's your next excercise: to get makempy running, i.e. these chars are
outlines made by pstoedit; is that installed on your system

(i can probably cook up an alternative using low level pdf but ...)

Adam,

Goodness gracious! I never saw that.

Meanwhile, with these changes, the document compiled (almost). I have
a title page with the beautiful background of letters, but I have no
"Fonts in Context," nor "Hans Hagen, October 2001."

Log file attached, it that's any help.

I tried to run texfont demofont.dat, but failed.
First off, Hans, am I missing a runtools.rb? I can't find it.

Secondly, I think the current demofont.dat has a bug because it triggers
an obscure texfont filtering feature. I changed the comments at the head
of the file to work around it:

# we assume that demofont.afm and demofont.pfb are present
# run with:
# texfont demofont.dat

# test test

--ve=test --co=test --ma --in demofont
--ve=test --co=test --ma --in --sla=.167 demofont
--ve=test --co=test --ma --in --ext=1.50 demofont
--ve=test --co=test --ma --in --cap=.750 demofont
--ve=test --co=test --ma --in --nol demofont

...and by running:
 texfont --ve=test --co=test --ma --in demofont.dat
...I do indeed get the modified Iwona fonts.

more below...

Okay, another couple hacks to cross further hurdles:

The top of my mfonts.tex now looks like:

\preloadtypescripts % I wanted to speed things up a bit!
\startnotmode[atpragma]
\startMPenvironment[global]
                              % Current bug in distribution
 \definefontsynonym [LMSans-Italic] [LMSans-Oblique]
 \definefontsynonym [LMSans-BoldItalic] [LMSans-BoldOblique]
% lucida gets called all over the place
 \definetypescriptsynonym [lucida] [palatino]
 \usetypescript[adobekb][8r,ec]
\stopMPenvironment
\stopnotmode

\usetypescriptfile [type-buy]
\usetypescriptfile [typeface]

\environment ../allkind/mcommon.tex

... That much ought to fix the main body (though with the synonyms and
substitutions, the fonts it mentions in the text are not always going to
match the actual fonts used now!)

Go down a little bit, and you'll see the title page font set:

\startnotmode[atpragma]

  \startMPenvironment[global]
    \usetypescript[handwriting,map][lucida][texnansi]
    \definefontsynonym[TitlePage-Bold][LucidaHandwriting-Italic]
    %usetypescript[calligraphy,map][chancery][texnansi]
    %definefontsynonym[TitlePage-Bold][Chancery]
% ...

comment out the lucida lines, and uncomment the chancery lines, and you
should be in business for a full run!

er, I hope.
Good luck?

in the past we have cycled between both [u|p]plr8t kind of names and the
problem was that

(1) sometimes one of them was missing
(2) this aliasses file (obscure kpse feature) was interfering
(3) the location of files changed [this urw35v thing] resulting in
missed files while copying

for instance, it was always a gamble what reference to the dingbats
would work today

so

this looks like the way to go

that makes two votes ...

First: here is a quick fix. I've made my copy of mfonts.tex
start with these

   \usetypescript[adobekb][8r,ec]
   \usetypescriptfile [type-buy]
   \usetypescriptfile [typeface]
   \environment ../allkind/mcommon.tex

That fixed the problem with Palatino (It now says I have
missing LucidaBright (texnansi-lbXXX) fonts, but I believe
that is correct because it is from an example, and at least
one hurdle is taken).

Now for the actual problem.

It looks like this problem is caused by type-dis.tex. In that file,
fontsynonym mappings are provided between texfont-style metric names
and berry-style filenames for a number of free Type 1 fonts,
esp. the ones that come from URW and are shipped with ghostscript.

In theory, the definitions in that file are fine, but in the real
world there is a problem:

The URW fonts are normally used only to mimic Adobe's base
PostScript fonts like Times and Palatino, are therefore almost
never installed under their true names like URWPalladio and
   Nimbus Roman.

So, the font metrics for URWPalladioL-Roma in EC (psnfss)
encoding are typically installed as pplr8t (the initial p
indicating Adobe, to mimic Palatino-Roman) instead of uplr8t
like they should be (that initial u would be indicating urw).

I am not sure how Hans feels about this, but there are two ways out:

1. Certainly the *easiest* way to get a working solution is to
change the fontsynonyms in typ-dis.tex so that they match the real
world instead of the desired world.

2. But on the other hand, that would be promoting a rather bad
practise, and deleting the fontsynonyms instead would be better.

I happen to know that Hans will start distributing a cont-fnt.zip
file soon that will contain texfont-style metrics, so my vote goes
to the second solution.

Greetings, Taco

All,

I was able to texfont the demofont and texfont the palatino and
compiled test files for each. But when I try to compile mfonts.tex, I
get the stuff below. I obviously need help. I have no uplr8t anything
on my system.
