mswincontext problems

Hi all (esp. windows users),

Last night I tried setting up a Win98SE for use with context
using mswincontext.zip (I borrowed a laptop for bachotek, so
I could not install linux on it ... ).

It went terribly wrong. At first I thought it was just the
shoddy Win98 install on that machine, but Olivier tells me
he also had problems installing the latest mswincontext, so
I hope another someone who uses Windows98 can testrun the
installation.

I got all sort of errors from command.com (syntax error,
out of environment space, command not found, permission
denied), and the wiki page is definately incomplete so I
could not really debug. In the end, I basically gave up.

After update with 2006-04-24 mswincontext & cont-tmf versions, i was
unable to compile anything.

Everything went fine with previous updates, so I decided to follow exactly
wiki method for a  Stand-alone ConTeXt distribution : same end.

>From what i see in scite compilation panel : (new)texexec is unable to
find cont-en.fmt 

As a good end user, I'm unable to investigate more, but obviously wait for
an answer/update. 

(hopefully, i can borrow another xp box for continuing job)

Hi Taco,

Although I do not have a recent version installed on my box at work.

When I installed mswincontext on that box, which is a 98 Windows, I had 
to install also 4DOS. This solved the problem with
the environment.
4DOS for Windows 98 is free of charge in the meantime: 
http://jpsoft.com/download.html

If 'out of environment space' is the root of the problem, then it
should be possible to specify a larger environment when starting up
a dos box.

In a distant past, I used to create specialized dos boxes for TeX
with a larger environment and the necessary environment variables.
This was for w95.

This comment may be way off-base since I haven't tried myself to
install mswincontext.

windows 98 has limitation on the env space; the way to get around it is to (1) define a larger value in the comspec (config.sys if i'm right) or to enlarge the value in the associated dos box 

anyhow, forget about windows 98, just as you forget about suse 2.0 or a linux 0.5 kernel or mac system 9

it puts them in the curren tpath, under ./pdfetex (you can move 'm to 
the web2c path or wait for an update later today); sorry for messing up 
things

And then you land back into reality, hoping that people won't switch
to MikTeX 2.5 (too early)! (MikTeX 2.4 was already a nightmare for
ConTeXt, in 2.5 it's completely broken.)

The first impression makes me feel that you won't need only "if
(MikTeX)" whitches in your ruby scripts, but also "if (MikTeX 2.5)",
...

And what I least understand: the developer puts a lot of effort into
development itself (features like improving YaST to display just about
every PostScript \special and so on), but completely ignores any
requests from ConTeXt users.

I had problems too!
First of all 'command.com' is the wrong command prozessor for the 
used batch-files. You should have 'cmd.exe'.
