Kudos to Patrick for pointing out what was wrong with my file--he
helped me immensely, and I'm very grateful to him. The solution is: in
addition to \clubpenalty and \widowpenalty, there is also
\brokenpenalty, which enforces the good old typographical rule that no
page should be broken after a hyphenated word. When I set it to 0, all
my pages had exactly the same number of lines. Thanks to Patrick, and
may others find it useful!
Thomas

Hi Patrick,
feeling a bit grumpy this morning, are we? ;-)
Well, it is kind of difficult to provide a minmal example because, as
the nature of the problem involves, it would necessarily be more than
~2-4 pages of text. If you're interested, I can send you a file
off-list, but I don't think I should bother everybody here with long
excerpts.
Thanks for your interest, and best wishes
Thomas

No. Not really. Do I make such an impression? ;-) Perhaps it is my
'smart-ass-day'...

there is always \dorecurse{#}{what} and \input myfavoritefile

You can do that.

Dear colisters,
is there a way to tel Context to be dumb about pagebreaks? I mean to
say "fill every page with the exact same number of lines, no matter
what, regardless of clubs, widows, women and children"? Here's my setup:
\setuplayout[lines=17,footer=0.7cm]
\starttext
\clubpenalty=0
\widowpenalty=0
Nevertheless, some pages are 1 or even three lines shorter than the
rest (there are no tables, floats, pictures etc.). Can this be
prevented?
Thanks
Thomas

\def\defaultwidowpenalty{0}
\def\defaultclubpenalty{0}
or maybe:
setuplayout[grid=yes]
or in the beta i just posted:
\startsetups [NeverMind]
\setups[*reset]
\widowpenalty\zerocount
\clubpenalty \zerocount
\stopsetups
\setuplayout[setups=NeverMind]
or ...

Thanks! This command alleviated the problem without eliminating all the
"shorter" pages. \setuplayout[grid=yes] actually made it a lot worse;
almost every page was several lines short. I suspect it might have
something to with itemizations (of which there are quite a few); this
seems to confuse (Con)TeX(t).

If you really want your problem solved, you should post an example.

Why is it so difficult to post a minimal but complete example????
