I might be in error, but I thought I could use the ConTeXt macro \assignfullfilename used in
\def\setexamfilename#1\to#2{%
\assignfullfilename{\the\questiondir}{#1}\to#2}
Did something happen to \assignfullfilename? Is it missing from MKIV? Is there an alternative?

just do \edef\blabla{\the\questiondir/#1} as deep down we will handle
the platform specific issues (such macros date from many years back,
when platforms were more different)
