Use \definetyping (and \start<name>..\stop<name>) instead so:

\definetyping[abc][style=\ttx]
\definetyping[def][style=\ttxx]

\starttext

\startabc
example
example
\stopabc

\startdef
example
example
\stopdef

\stoptext

Probably best to capitalise Abc & Def as well just in case you choose a name that is already in use.
