I am a beginner in the TeX and ConTeXt world, and am of course dazed and
confused. Before asking questions, I wanted to make sure I have all the
docs in English that I should.
My initial installation was from SuSE 7.2; since then I have downloaded
newer versions (including a recent beta) from www.ntg.nl/context/.
Here are the docs I most often refer to:
ConTeXt the manual, January 27, 2000 (cont-enp.pdf)
Getting Started with ConTeXt (no date, old commands?)
(context-getting-started.pdf)
Fonts in ConTeXt, April 2001 (mfonts-beta.pdf)
Plus, the texshow application. (Giuseppe Bilotta mentioned this on
comp.text.tex, else I wouldn't have known about it).
Am I missing anything essential for a beginner? I am getting good
results so far, but I want to use the system properly and make life easy
for myself.
My first project is the prepress work for a collection of short stories
first published in 1895. Text only, pretty simple layout. I like
Computer Modern Roman, but may have to find a different outline font
more appropriate to the subject matter.

link, click on the link to the pdf document, then you get 'showcase.pdf'
which links to 'show-man.pdf', which mentions many of the manuals manuals

looks likes you have neough to start (you may like the metafun manual); a
good point for picking some details are the s-*.tex files (also described
in show-pre.pdf as accessible from the showcase).

may work in your version.

You should compile a newer edition of pdfTeX, too.
My SuSE 7.1 PPC had a 13d version, and you should use >14f with a recent
ConTeXt.
A usual problem with SuSE is that the old perl scripts are in some /bin
directory and don't get overwritten. I deleted them and set symlinks to
/context/perltk/*.pl at the same location.
Further there's a oldfashioned fmtutil.cnf, where for ConTeXt some
*.ini-files are mentioned where should be *.tex. (You may only change the
endings, and check if the lines are not commented.)

I have also been trying to find the right manuals to read:-
MS-CB-EN.PDF "ConTeXt an excursion" has some useful things in it
bibmod.pdf has the commands for bibliography but I have not used it yet
1998-001.pdf "Context up to date 1998/1" has some commands in it!
up-008-s.pdf "Automatic Tables" have some table commands that I haven't yet
used
Drawings need at least:-
metafun-p.pdf "metafun" an excellent manual on the drawing extension
commands by Hans Hagen
Metapost manual "A User's Manual for MetaPost" is also good
Fonts:-
mfonts.pdf
mtexfont.pdf
I also do not know whether I have seen all that there is.

showcase.pdf links to the other documents do not work on my machine. There
is not the usual indication of the URL for the document that would be loaded
either.

I have trouble with this (and other interactive PDF docs) also. Neither
konqueror nor acroread displays them properly. Perhaps it is a linux
configuration I haven't done properly?

I can't reproduce the error here with Acrobat Reader 5.0 on W98... there
must be other Unix/linux users on the list who might be able to say more
about this. Maybe a configuration issue?

they run ok here, so maybe it's a config problem indeed; a few manuals may
pose problems in acro 5 (start up message) but should view ok
(these will be regenerated with the latest acro 5 safe pdftex).
Only files with transparencies may fail on acro 4, but there are not many
of them.

The links will work ok if you put the files in the same structure as the
site. I will make a 'directory' page that one can 'wget' in order to get
the files needed.

some of tjose files are large, so download them first; some acrobat
versions cannot handle big files well on a distance

Hans,
Thanks for this, it has helped a lot. In order to get individual files I
used
http://www.pragma-pod.nl/general/manuals/xphysml-s.pdf
for instance, and then placed the files in the directory structure shown and
all was sweetness and light.

I did have the same "problem" looking for documentation. I like the
design of the web pages, but at a first look you cannot find
anything. The information you give here (how up to date are the docs)
should belong on the site. You download a manual and realize, that
it's for an earlier version :-( I know of at least one person giving
up on ConTeXt because it was difficult to get the documentation
matching the software.
Another suggestion would be a section, how to get started with popular
distributions. Which ConTeXt version is included in popular TeX
distributions as teTeX or MikTeX (again, with which version)? What
needs to be done to upgrade to current versions?
Probably I am a bit fastidious (sorry, word taken from a dictionary)
by using a Debian GNU/Linux distribution, but a bit more guidance
would be helpful ...

But how much of a problem is that? I've used 1996 or so manual for
years without trouble. Many stuff is optimized or improved throughout
the years, but it's only this year that we've seen a real breaking
change (the new font mechanism). In all cases you could take any
manual you wish.
For newer features there are quite clear up-to-date manuals. You have
to study them of course. Add to that that TeX isn't easy.
ConTeXt might have many problems (don't know which :-) ) but the
documentation can't be one of them.
Finding them could perhaps be made easier, why not just have a
documentation button on the main screen which just lists *all*
documentation, manuals, up-to-dates, beta's, whatever?

actually, there is a page that mentions (most) documents; klick on the
small keyhole at the bottom of the pages and you'll end up in a section in
that doc.

AFAIK konquerer uses ghostscript, thus all interaction is not available.
Acroread, version 4.05 built date 2000-01-05, works fine in case of viewing
and interaction.
But i wonder whether Adobe will release acroread V5 for Linux. Maybe
this could fix some other bugs the V4 release has.
Does anybody know if Adobe plans to release a Unix/Linux V5 version
of acroread in the future?

I've found that interactive docs work better on Linux with Acroread v4
when opened from the menu, rather than when specified on the command
line. It shouldn't make a difference, but it does.
On the whole, I prefer PDF docs formatted for printing. Interactive
versions tend to take over the desktop in undesirable ways.

There is a Distiller 5 for Unix, at least.
(I never got Acrobat Reader working on my Linux PPC. I'm damned to use xpdf,
that is a bit better than ghostview etc.; it understands internal links.)
