It worked for me on TexLive 5b:

This is MetaPost, Version 0.641 (Web2C 7.3.1x) (INIMP)
  (/u/TeX/texmf/metapost/context/metafun.mp (/u/TeX/texmf/metapost/base/plain.mp
Preloading the plain mem file, version 0.63)
  (/u/TeX/texmf/metapost/context/mp-tool.mp)
  (/u/TeX/texmf/metapost/context/mp-spec.mp)
  (/u/TeX/texmf/metapost/context/mp-core.mp)
  (/u/TeX/texmf/metapost/context/mp-page.mp)
  (/u/TeX/texmf/metapost/context/mp-text.mp)
  (/u/TeX/texmf/metapost/context/mp-shap.mp)
  (/u/TeX/texmf/metapost/context/mp-butt.mp)
  (/u/TeX/texmf/metapost/context/mp-char.mp) )
Beginning to dump on file metafun.mem
   (mem=metafun 2000.9.9)
at most 2116 strings of total length 29826
25392 memory locations dumped; current usage is 9163&16120
  1083 symbolic tokens
  Transcript written on metafun.log.

As a side note. Is there any ntg-context archive on the net? If not,
can anyone provide me with plaintext postings reaching as far as
possible (UNIX mbox/MMDF format prefered), so I could make such an
  archive?

/S
