this M(not)WE gives me the following error:
You can't use `\prevdepth' in restricted horizontal mode
Is this a bug?
I'm running: 2016.11.24 12:05 MKIV beta

because \placefigure is a mlv command i.e. it is not supposed to be used
in a box
