Dear developers,
thanks for your hard work!

Thank you Wolfgang for the Japanese line break rule fix in line 831 of scrp-cjk.lua:
full_width_open = stretch_break, -- WS, was: nobreak_stretch_break_shrink,

Emanuel

Many thanks for the new release, Hans and Mikael.

Great news, BachoTeX 2025 will have at least two talks on column sets
(https://bachotex.gust.org.pl/2025/talks_en.html#heading6 and
https://bachotex.gust.org.pl/2025/talks_en.html#heading7).

I wonder whether an extra challenge for column sets would be the use of
foot- and linenotes.

Just as a comment. Many thanks again for the excellent work,

Pablo

kind of boring so we compentate that with the usual less serious and
more fun tex talk by a teenager we draw to the conference

they already can do footnotes

Of course, many thanks to everyone who made it possible.

Sorry, I tried and failed:

  \showframe\showgrid
  \starttext

  \setuppagenumbering[alternative=doublesided]
  \setuplayout[grid=yes]
  \setupwhitespace[none]

  \setupindenting[always, none, 0pt]

  \setupheads
    [indenting=none,
     indentnext=no]

  \startsetups balance:example
    \balancetopskip    \strutht
    \balancebottomskip \strutdp
  \stopsetups

  \definecolumnset
    [paral]
    [n=1,
     ]

  \definesubcolumnset[paral][L][1]
  \definesubcolumnset[paral][R][2]

  \page[even]
  \startcolumnset[paral]
    \dorecurse{25}
     {\startsubcolumnset[L]
        \startsubject[title=Zapf]
         \samplefile{zapf}\footnote{\samplefile{knuth}}
        \stopsubject
     \stopsubcolumnset
     \startsubcolumnset[R]
        \startsubject[title=Knuth]
         \samplefile{knuth}\footnote{\samplefile{zapf}}
        \stopsubject
     \stopsubcolumnset
     \flushsubcolumnsets[spread]}
  \stopcolumnset
  \stoptext

It has to be a stupid mistake, but having footnotes would allow me to
tinker with another bilingual text.

Many thanks for your help,

Pablo

I would think ConTeXt users in Greenland would prefer to Nuuk all US page

The TL installer coulds put this in cont-loc.mkxl

\unprotect

\appendtoks

\ifhasxtoks{in}{\layouttargetparameter\c!width\layouttargetparameter\c!height\layoutparameter\c!width\layoutparameter\c!height}\relax
         \writestatus{layout}{you're using an illegal or alien page size}%
     \fi
\to \everysetuplayout

\protect

because I assume it also adapts the layout

Yeah, I added that code back in April 2023. I argued that the layout of
a document shouldn't depend on what system it's compiled on, but the
rest of the TeX Live team disagreed, and it does kinda make sense to be
consistent with the rest of the formats.

Well, a good start might be to make the following document work :)

    \setupcolours[textcolour=grey]

    \startTEXpage
        Hello, world!
    \stopTEXpage

Haha, please no; there are *dozens* of us Canadian ConTeXt users.

Thanks,

Sounds like a good idea to me. A few \aliased\let statements here and
there in the context sources should do it. ;-)

Hmm... I wonder how many of us there are.
And how many are on this list.

Thank you! Unfortunately, it changes neither the “entry not flushed”
problem nor the “{0}{0}” in PDF bookmarks.

This is fun, fits the “smoking” quote very well! :D

So, this is copying and downsampling?
Would be great if we could get rid of the dependency on GraphicsMagick.

Ah, the first photo filters! Then is auto-contrast, sharpening, blurring
etc. just a bytemap definition away.
e.g. https://ai.stanford.edu/~syyeung/cvweb/tutorial1.html
or https://lodev.org/cgtutor/filtering.html

I think I begin to understand how to implement these… (But I prefer to
do image manipulations visually.)

lucky me i have no clue what that's about ... are you sure the bookmark

Indeed. But currently only in the mp route. It's easy to add to the png
route. But forget about jpg as that woudl demand going -> png which
probably is costly and i don't want to pull in libraries. (One can of
course convert beforehand to png.)

I'll check it ... simple functions should be easy. But only if used and
usefull.

Sure. This is part of (driven by) other usage too, but it being fast it
could actually at some point help to keep non-final runs fast with small
pdf when lots of such images are there.

I'll think of more.

Well, it used to work a few versions ago. You wrote the regression was
introduced with some tagging changes, and your fix for Rik (that should
be in the latest update) didn’t change anything for me.

see https://www.mail-archive.com/ntg-context@ntg.nl/msg110982.html
and https://www.mail-archive.com/ntg-context@ntg.nl/msg111116.html

I don’t know if the “{0}{0}” in some PDF chapter bookmarks are related.
I can’t see a pattern when this happens.

Ah, so I can’t replace grph-downsample (was t-degrade).

Of course, and if it’s not for JPEGs, it doesn’t make sense to integrate
anyway.

I’m sure of that. I’ll keep trying to focus on documenting old features.

Hi,

I pushed an update. As already announced a while ago, there are some
adaptations in footnotes (esp multiple categories) wrt more robust
spacing in border cases.

Another addition is:

   \setuplayout[grid=snapping]

that is: a different grid snapping model will kick in, one that
delegates morte to the tex engine. There is some info in
beyond-snapping.tex where we (Mikael and I) explain what is happening.
This variant is still experimental in the sense that we might not have
catched all cases where snapping need to happen. Some mechanisms (like
section heads and math accept a snapping parameter).

Another mechanism we're playing with is vertical spacing: \blank etc.
This will not really change but we might get a bit better prediction in
cases where we want to see how much space is available as well as a bit
less weird implementation deep down.

In addition to this we have the usual fixes and/or additionalfeatures as
discussed on this list.

Last but not least: Wolfgang updated the interface definition files and
in the process checked all changes since that was last done!

As tex live entered code freeze / test mode, this is a prelude to the
yearly (engine + context) snapshot.

Thank you!

So far, it can’t make a format on OSX Intel.

Compile my own binary, generate database, make format… still no luck:

The lua interpreter ran into a problem, so the remainder of this lua

be ignored.

hm, i can't test that right now (don't want to risk a fuse blowing
because I plug in the old intel mac power supply with a bang, happened
twice now)

strange, although at that moment 'mathematics' isn't defined yet, it
should not matter because it isn't accessed

It worked on my “new” Linux laptop. While it has an AMD Ryzen, it needed
the Intel binary (linux-64), is this normal?

AMD Ryzen is x86-64.

Oops, I mixed up AMD and ARM 🙈

I should retire.

Hi Hans,

today I updated one Win11 computer at work and format generation seems
impossible (I deleted `texmf-cache` after updating).

The error lines are (the last ones from `cont-en.log`):

  loading > ConTeXt Spacing Macros / Vertical
  system > callbacks > bad callback registration 'delayed_glue'

This quits the format generation.

BTW, just in case it helps: I have to copy `bin/mtxrun.exe` to
`texmf-win64/bin/mtxrun.exe`, `texmf-win64/bin/context.exe` and
`texmf-win64/bin/luametatex.exe`.

I’m afraid I cannot understand what (I) may be (doing) wrong here.

Many thanks for your help,

Pablo

Well, from Linux I’m going to make a clean install with
`--platform=win64` and see what happens tomorrow.

Many thanks for your help,

Pablo

A clean install worked fine.
