What's the functional difference between ec and tex256? What good is it
to generate both?

There doesn't seem to be a functional difference between ec and tex256, http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Encodings_and_Regimes states only that tex256 uses Adobe character names, and I thought it would be nice, but didn't really think much... ;-)
