Ok so I'm trying to install cont-tmf.zip on a Fedora 9 box with TexLive 2008
into my local ~/texmf/.

Did you remake the formats after unzipping cont-tmf.zip? The format  
texexec finds is from 2007/01, so it can't be the one that comes with  
TeXLive 2008, it must be some older stuff that shadows newer formats.  
What does
kpsewhere --engine=pdftex cont-en.fmt
return?

You need to make the formats for these as well:

texexec --make --all --xtx

(and run texhash again after creating the formats; when you think  
about it, it'll make sense)

luatex is a bit of a special beast right now; you'll need to massage  
your system a bit in order to use it. I have written instructions a  
while ago, but some users have reported they didn't have success with

With MikTeX you cannot use LuaTeX (not to say that currently with
MikTeX you cannot use ConTeXt at all :), but I often had MikTeX +
ConTeXt minimals installed, and if I needed, I executed setuptex when
I needed the minimals.

I would suggest you to install TeX Live 2008, and you'll get both
LaTeX and LuaTeX working, also on Windows. You can always have a copy
of minimals just to be sure that latest features are working, and
enable them only when needed.

Hello,

I solved a similar/related problem with
    set RUBYLIB=/cygdrive/c/[Path to MikTeX or other
distr.]/scripts/context/ruby
(http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Talk:Windows_Installation)
but honestly I would be surprised if ConTeXt worked on cygwin out of the box.

Hi

There's no ConTeXt package on MikTeX.
The ConTeXt version in the TL will always not be the current version.
So.... No solution if you follow the package update of the two system.
Please consider ConTeXt Minimals (a TL based distribution).

I ought to mention that running texexec within cygwin results with the following
error.  Would installing ruby fix things?

$ texexec.exe
