Just a quick follow up in case Google points anyone this way: it looks
as though the linear_shade function will produce nice looking
gradients. Some examples can be found in:
http://www.pragma-ade.com/general/manuals/metafun-p.pdf
I will post again once(/if) I solve this for tables.
