The following minimal test does not seem to work on my set up

\input knuth
\startbuffer
a table
\stopbuffer
\placetable
    [top]
    [fig:x]
    {caption}
    {\getbuffer}
\stoptext

If top is replaced by any other options then all is OK.

The error is shown up as
