Thanks You can use \matrix from plain TeX: \startformula \left\{\matrix{ xx & yy \cr zz & aa} \right. \stopformula I'm not sure if there's any mechanism for automatic (right/left) alignment. I use \hfill if necessary. (xx\hfill yy\hfill \cr ...)
