Here is a part of (one of the) tma files:

return {
	['type']='files',
	['version']='1.0.1',
	['root']='/Users/hans/Library/texmf',
	['time']='11:18:34',
	['content']={
		['ec-raw-lstb.tfm']='fonts/tfm/yandy/lucida-h',
		['ec-raw-lbr.tfm']='fonts/tfm/yandy/lucida-h',
		['amsabfonts.sty']='tex/latex/local',
		['hlhr8a.tfm']='fonts/tfm/yandy/lucida-h',
		['hlsu8c.tfm']='fonts/tfm/yandy/lucida-h',
		['hlcbot8r.tfm']='fonts/tfm/yandy/lucida-h',
		['arrowWN.tfm']='fonts/tfm/local/lines-arrows',
		['arrowHS.tfm']='fonts/tfm/local/lines-arrows',
		['remap:arrowhs.tfm']='arrowHS.tfm',

		['arrowSS.tfm']='fonts/tfm/local/lines-arrows',
		['hlxbi8r.tfm']='fonts/tfm/yandy/lucida-h',
		['Icon
']={'source/local/EXAMS','source/local'},
		['cmttu10.tfm']='fonts/tfm/local/lines-arrows',
		['hlsrt8r.tfm']='fonts/tfm/yandy/lucida-h',
		['texnansi-raw-lsr.tfm']='fonts/tfm/yandy/lucida',
		['obox.sty']='tex/latex/local',
		['texnansi-lstbo.tfm']='fonts/tfm/yandy/lucida',
		['hlhri8t.vf']='fonts/vf/yandy/lucida-h',
		['hlhbc9d.vf']='fonts/vf/yandy/lucida-h',
		['lbh.pfb']='fonts/type1/yandy/lucida',
		['hlhb8t.tfm']='fonts/tfm/yandy/lucida-h',
		['exampa.tex']='source/local/EXAMS',
		['inline-org.tex']='tex/latex/cd-cases',
		['remap:.ds_store']='.DS_Store',
		['lbi.pfb']='fonts/type1/yandy/lucida',
		['remap:arrowwt.tfm']='arrowWT.tfm',

There is a file "source/local/Icon?" (dblquotes excluded) that must
be the culprit. Its just a file entry, no contents. But as an
artifact of the MaOSX system it cannot be ignored (and I'd like not
to throw them all away, risking they will appear again unnoticed). I
would be glad if it could be dealt with.
As can be seen, after "['Icon" a newline follows in the tma entry and
I am fairly sure that this will trigger the error.
Furthermore I draw attention to the ".DS_Store" file, which is a
MacOSX specific file that can be safely ignored.

I find in the log:
luac: ...16b2bec096137ef905785b0b02d6a/trees/
8380572d1d594c806eb224cb2d00c228.tma:20: unfinished string near ''Icon'
LuaTools | compiling files to /Users/hans/tmp/luatex-cache/context/
45016b2bec096137ef905785b0b02d6a/trees/
8380572d1d594c806eb224cb2d00c228.tmc
LuaTools | compiling failed for files, deleting file /Users/hans/tmp/
luatex-cache/context/45016b2bec096137ef905785b0b02d6a/trees/
8380572d1d594c806eb224cb2d00c228.tmc

Can this be caused by the Icon business? Does it cause problems?

By the way. In the TEXMFCACHE-directory it seems that each time I do
"luatools --generate" a new directory with a name like
"b9039f6e25c37964f568cecc8a8f763d" is generated. What do I do with
them? Keep only the most recent and throw the rest away? Aren't older
ones not cleaned out automatically? Also there are various tma and
tmc files in a tree directory. That ok?
