Well, start/stopbuffer should work... and Hans said that it will be fixed
in the next beta.

The problems seems to be a missing \endgroup

\setuvalue{\e!start\v!buffer}%
  {\bgroup
   \obeylines
   \dosingleempty\buff_start}

\def\buff_start[#1]%
  {\buff_start_indeed{}{#1}{\e!start\v!buffer}{\e!stop\v!buffer}}

\def\buff_start_indeed#1#2#3#4% \donothing needed !
  {\normalexpanded{\buff_pickup{#2}{#3}{#4}{}{\buff_stop{#4}}}}

Perhaps it should be
\def\buff_start[#1]%
  {\buff_start_indeed{}{#1}{\e!start\v!buffer}{\e!stop\v!buffer}\egroup}
