The twos are different lengths: it doesn't make much sense to strecth the text "to the limit" to its natural width (yes, it makes sense --- stretched is nil) try \ruledhbox to 5cm{\stretched{to the limit}} \ruledhbox to 5cm{\hsize=5cm\stretched{to the limit}} \ruledhbox to 5cm{\hsize=0cm\stretched{to the limit}} \ruledhbox{\stretched{to the limit}} \ruledhbox{\stretched[width=10cm]{to the limit}} -- luigi
