I think clueless me missed a space there...
MkII fails miserably due to pdftex missing that .dll file:
>mtxrun --autogenerate --script context --autopdf hello.tex

TeXExec | TeX run 1

...and I tried something as complicated as
% engine=pdftex
\starttext
Hello world!

....thank goodness we've already decided to migrate everything over to MkIV...
