This one unbolds the margin text:

\setupmargindata[inouter][style=\tf]

This one works well, it unbolds and reduces the size of the margin text:

\setupmargindata
  [inouter]
  [style={\switchtobodyfont[8pt]}]

This one does not seem to make a change:

\setupmargindata[inmargin][style={\tf}]

Also the inline options seems to unbold the inline text nicely:

\margindata[inouter]{\rm \it example}
