Messed up the order things:

Was:
\scale[\scalesetting]{%
    \expanded{\useMPgraphic{\xmlatt{#1}{name}}{\xmlatt{#1}{parameters}}}}%

And of course had to be:
\expanded{\scale[\scalesetting]{%
    \useMPgraphic{\xmlatt{#1}{name}}{\xmlatt{#1}{parameters}}}}%
