Aditya—

luatools --expand-var TEXMFHOME gets absolutely nothing, just a blank  
line and then return to the the main prompt.

kpsewhich --expand-var TEXMFHOME gets TEXMFHOME

kpsewhich t-ancientgreek.tex  gets nothing

luatools --localte t-ancientgreek.tex gets a blank line and then a  
return to the prompt
