Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone has packaged the ConTeXt standalone for nixpkgs/NixOS and if yes, can you share your derivation?

Thanks!

Best,
Mica

Hi Mica,

Short answer: no.

Longer answer: I’ve not myself previously compiled the various components that go into ConTeXt so producing a package definition is going to be a lot of work from scratch. If you have a specific target machine in mind (e.g. an x64) then producing a simple nix-shell that mimics a manual install of the pre-built binary might be simpler.

Also, ConTeXt changes frequently. That introduces quite a burden on keeping the Nix package up-to-date unless it can be automated, which in turn is yet more work. If I used Nixos as my daily driver I might consider it, but I don’t.

Thanks Bruce. For now I'm just using ConTeXt from TeXLive, which is packaged and is recent enough. I guess some sort of FHSEnv in nix, and then running the install script and patchelf might be enough?

Best,
Mica

If it helps, I managed to build a Docker image containing LMTX and run that under NixOS.

I’ve added Docker build instructions to the Wiki here:
<https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Installing_ConTeXt_LMTX_into_a_Docker_container>

In order to build that container on NixOS I had to update /etc/nixos/configuration.nix as per the instructions in this StackOverflow answer <https://stackoverflow.com/a/56769456> and then use “nix-shell -p docker”. Thereafter the “docker build ...” etc commands all worked as expected.
