It’s a bug. Below is a example from Hans new fonts manual, when both sentences are
in the same line the slant value for the second sentence is ignored but when you uncomment
the \par and the second sentence uses the right value.

\starttext

\definefontfeature
  [abitslanted]
  [default]
  [slant=.1]

\definefontfeature
  [abitmoreslanted]
  [default]
  [slant=.4]

\definedfont[Normal*abitslanted]This is a bit slanted. %\par
\definedfont[Normal*abitmoreslanted]And this is a bit more slanted.

\stoptext
