type-map.tex uses 'helvetica', but my URW fonts were originally set up
using 'helvetic' (8 chars) as per 'fontname/typeface.map' conventions.
Since it is slightly easier to edit type-map.tex than to rename all the
font dirs and map files, I suggest using 'helvetic'.

on tex live (my reference distribution) there are some directories with >8
names, which is why i decided for the full names (even tfm's are
sometimes >8 now)
maybe it should be an option,
fabrice, what is the official tex-live strategy?
