This is normal: 'doublesided' is not equal to 'doublesided '.
And 'doublesided' requires certainly an even number of pages.

Yes, very strange. It seems to be the combination of
- footer=...
- grid=yes
- height=middle
- \startfrontmatter
- \startstandardmakeup
that produces a first blank page...
