This is what I do for my slides

\startslide
\vfill
\externalfigure[name][width=\textwidth]
\vfill
\stopslide

where I have startslide and stopslide defined to take care of some 
other things.

You can also try
\placefigure[][here]{..}{..} to get a figure number and caption
