Hi,

as there seemed to be interactions between ConTeXt that comes with TeXLive and the recent one I've installed, I finally deleted EVERYTHING and started anew.

-> I installed TeXLive on a WinXP - without the ConTeXt option.
-> I copied the saved texec.exe in TeXLive's /bin folder
-> I installed bin-aleph-1.15--2.2--RC2-win32.zip from CTAN
-> I executed the following comands:
   mktexlsr
   fmtutil --all
   mktexlsr
   texexec --make --all --alone --tex=aleph
   mktexlsr
   texexec alephtest1.tex --tex=aleph --output=dpx

But again it failed and ended in "*".

There ought to be people out there who got Aleph (+ConTeXt) working.

How did you do that?

Could someone please have a look and tell what is wrong?

Thank you very much,

Steffen

sure I can check.

but which pl files do you mean in particularly?
(i've noticed the new tds paths, but don't know what to look for...)

Yes, when I installed TeXLive there was also ConTeXt installed.
Then I immediately deleted the files in texmf/tex/context/base/ and texmf/metapost/context/base/ .

Now I also deleted the texmf/.../texexec.ini file and reinstalled context again (texmf-local tree)
Hashed the ls-r, rebuild the formats and tried it again.

Still the same error logs.

Maybe there are still some leftovers from TeXLives ConTeXt interfering?
What is the right way to "get rid of it (minus texexec.exe)"?
When I install ConTeXt in a local tree do I have to delete more ConTeXt files in the main tree?

Thank you,
Steffen

It was in TeXLive/bin/win32-static and now I copied it to the regular TeXLive/bin/win32.
Then again I executed the commands you recommended (with aleph as eomega),
and tried to texexec my file afterwards,
but again it didn't work.

The process stopped with a "*" - see log below.

Could you have a look, please?

Thank you,
Steffen

Hi,

in order to use Aleph in ConTeXt I switched from MacOSX to WinXP.

I installed fptex from the latest TeXLive CD (Sept.2003)
installed the recent ConTeXt beta in my local tree,
installed also the latest (?) Aleph version from CTAN ("bin-aleph-1.15--2.2--RC2-win32-static.zip")
in the main tree and followed the steps Hans once wrote here:

> texexec --make --alone --tex=aleph
>
> texexec yourfile --tex=aleph --output=dpx
>
> (or first line of file: % tex=aleph output=dvipdfmx)

The result was not working:
***

 TeXExec 4.0 - ConTeXt / PRAGMA ADE 1997-2003

                format : cont-en

             inputfile : alephtest1

                output : dvipdfmx

             interface : en

Then I tried the steps Idris recommend once:

The result was the same error output as above.

Could someone who has Aleph successfully running tell me his/her secret, please?

Thank you,
Steffen

It's even an FAQ: http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html?label=aleph,
which says

"The Aleph project aims to build a "usable" version of Omega,
incorporating e-TeX extensions from the NTS project.

Two sets of concerns have provided impetus to the project: first, that
many users need the e-TeX extensions, and they're not on the Omega
development path; and second, that the Omega project is currently
immersed in radical restructuring of Omega, and is not able to be
particularly responsive to user requirements in the short term. In the
longer term, the Aleph project hope that their work will be rendered
irrelevant by the development of Omega proper.

The current pre-release snapshot of Aleph resides on CTAN with the
rather modest name of e-Omega. Follow development by subscribing to the
project mailing list via http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/aleph"

You must make sure that aleph, a flavor of TeX like pdfeTeX, is actually
available for the Mac, then create the plain and context formats for aleph.

eomega --ini *plain \dump
eomega --ini *cont-en
texexec --make en -tex=eomega

are the relevant commands. eomega _is_ aleph.

If you want to do serious work with aleph u'll have to modify the
texmf.cnf file as well: comment this line

extra_mem_bot.context   =      4000000

otherwise you will meet some nasty surprises!

Really?!? Where is it? (unless it's the same experimental file Hans sent a
few weeks back)

Is Aleph even available on the Mac now? I know that Alan Hoenig had
problems getting it a few months back...

So I execute
sudo texexec --make --alone --tex=aleph
and try

% tex=aleph output=dvipdfmx
\start \textdir TLT\relax \setups[ward]
\start \textdir BLB\relax \red \setups[ward]
\stop \setups[ward]
\stop

But that gives me only:

 TeXExec 4.0 - ConTeXt / PRAGMA ADE 1997-2003

            executable : aleph
                format : cont-en

                output : dvipdfmx
             interface : en
          current mode : none
               TeX run : 1

sh: aleph: command not found

           return code : 32512
              run time : 0 seconds

total run time : 1 seconds

What else is missing?

texexec --make --alone --tex=aleph

Hi,

ever so often I read mails by Giuseppe or Idris on Aleph.
Now I also saw that there is a context-manual on aleph.
Does this mean I can use the examples mentions there under ConTeXt?

Running an alephtest.tex file ...
\start \textdir TLT\relax \setups[ward]
\start \textdir BLB\relax \red \setups[ward]
\stop \setups[ward]
\stop
... tells me that "\textdir" is an "Undefined control sequence"

What is missing?

When I installed ConTeXt I executed the following command lines:
mv /Users/steffen/Desktop/cont-tmf.zip /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local
cd /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local
rm tex/context/base/*
rm metapost/context/base/*
unzip -a -L -o cont-tmf.zip
cp /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/context/config/texexec.rme /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/context/config/texexec.ini
cp /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/tex/context/user/cont-sys.rme /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/tex/context/user/cont-sys.tex
sudo mktexlsr
sudo fmtutil --all
sudo texhash

Do I have to add/change something in order to use ConTeXt and aleph?

As you see I don't know where to start.
Apologies if even my question are wrong!

Thank you,

Steffen Wolfrum

(I am running the latest contextbeta under MacOS X)
