Oh. In that case, I will do
\startbuffer[poerty]
line 1
line
\stopbuffer
\def\poetry
{\startlines
\getbuffer[poetry]
\stoplines}
or even
\def\getpoerty#1[#2]%
{\startlines
\getbuffer[#2]
\stoplines}
That should work (again untested).
