So the * is just so that they are not accidently overwritten. But I do not like the different treatment for MkII: cont-new.mkii \enablemode[mkii] cont-env.mkiv \enablemode[mkiv] \newsystemmode{mkiv} \setsystemmode{mkiv} One more minor difference to remember.
