Perhaps we can add an align key to \startTABLE macro so that we could say

\startTABLE[align={left, right, middle}]
  \NC a \NC b \NC c \NC \NR
  \NC a \NC b \NC c \NC \NR
\stopTABLE

similar to math alignment.
