There is pdfsync but that is Mac only (AFAIU). In latex, I had 
occasionally used vpe 
(http://tug.ctan.org/cgi-bin/ctanPackageInformation.py?id=vpe). I 
tried it on Windows (MikTeX) and it worked ok, but was not too useful. 
The documentation claims that it also works on Unix.
