But \setupbackgrounds[footer][text][background=Blocks,state=repeat] 
doesn’t work.
Does this make sense if I don’t want layers in _all_ areas to repeat?

Thank you – so RealPageNumber/NOfPages was wrong? I got that from 
simpleslides.
