It's working now. As root I ran texexec --make --all
Following Thomas A. Schmitz posting I checked if the file cont-nl.fmt
was in /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/web2c. This was not the case.
Instead the generated file cont-nl-fmt was located in
/Users/myadministratorname. What I did was copying the file to
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/web2c and now it works.
