seeking ConTeXt code

Hi.  I am thinking that the time has come for me to use ConTeXt for a
big project.  I need several features at once and eplain and LaTeX are
not able to do them all well at the same time:

      * multicolumns (different numbers of columns on the same page)
      * table of contents (all can do, but conflicts with fancybox,
                quire.tex) 
      * fancy boxes
      * quire collation (for booklet-style pagination but without
                post-processing)

I have the ConTeXt beginners manual in English and the teTeX
installation on Linux.  I would very much appreciate the opportunity
to look at other people's ConTeXt sources, since that's often the
fastest way for me to learn.

Also, any tips on configuring a teTeX installation would be a great
help.

You can have them in many disguises, at every level and in every
combination, you can influence expansion, influence the layout and
influence interaction etc etc

The big manual shows some examples. (dutch but not that hard to
translate; just ask).

That should be rather easy because tetex is context aware. Just make
sure you have texexec.pl renamed to texexec and copied to the bin path.
The same for texutil.

Yes.  They are boxes like \framed, but in an oval shape or with a
shadow effect.  I was very surprised that it has a known bug where
using fancybox (a standard package that's part of the LaTeX base)
breaks the Table of Contents in LaTeX.  It seems that kind of bug
would be fixed immediately; perhaps LaTeX is too complex to fix.  But
I digress.

OK.  I have the dutch manual, and I'll take a stab at reading about
the quire collation features when I get ConTeXt working, but so far I
haven't been able to get "Hello, world!" working.  (More below.)

I'm using the teTeX that comes with the RedHat 6.0 distribution.  I
hadn't had any trouble with it, but I've had trouble with earlier
teTeX rpms ... anyway, this is what's happenning:

I have a small ConTeXt source file:

    % interface=en

    \starttext

    % (end first.tex)

It won't compile with "texexec --pdf --verbose first", although I've
already uncommented the context lines using texconfig (also tried
fmtutil -edit):

    Sorry, I can't find the format `cont-en.efmt'; will try `context.efmt'.

The problem seems to be installation-related, since this is what
happens when I run "texexec --make en" (even though etex.src _is_ in
my installation of teTeX):

Can you check the texmf.cnf file and see if the etex path is added to
the context specific input path?

Hey, thanks!  I am now the proud owner of a ConTeXt document that
says, "Hello, World!"

I'm going to CC Thomas Esser in case he thinks that others would
benefit from the change.

I was looking for that section in the Dutch manual, but I don't speak
Dutch, and I'm not sure where the section on special booklet collation
is.  I noticed "Pagineren" and "Paginanummers", but I didn't see it
there.  

Is it hard to do?  Basically, I'm interested in taking a document with
dynamically-generated context (so I won't know beforehand how many
pages there are) and making it have pages ready for double-sided
front-and-back printing, as if I ran my LaTeX "[twosided]" document
through the psutils' psbook and "psnup -n 2".

By the way, I'm excited about ConTeXt!  I didn't really understand
what it is--a whole new format like plain and LaTeX.  It's very
coherent, consistent, common-sensical, and _powerful_.

Also, is there a way to generate printed documentation from the
ConTeXt sources?  I see there's a lot of information in there, and it
looks like it's all or mostly English.

And lastly, is there a searchable archive of this mailing list?

It can be of help to set up 'texshow', which provides you with some
basic help on the commands. 

This concerns \stelarrangerenin or \setuparranging

There are two ways to do this: 

(1) while typesetting
(2) afterwards

Actually (2) comes down to (1) where each page is pasted in as a figure.
This feature is built in texexec: texexec --pdfarrange --paper=a4a5
--pdf --print=up yourfile.pdf

Method 1 is the most natural one because there the typesetting is tuned
to the natural paper size. You pick up a paperformat and map it onto a
print format. Then you set up the arrangement. The next sample is from
the manual (

Now, the main problem is that arrangement takes place in the last stage.
This means running with the arrangement commented and then run a last
one with the arrangement. The reson behind this is that otherwise all
the references and indexes and lists get spoiled (page 5 can be output
before page 1). 

When you use a5 on a4, you can use texexec. Just set up your document
for a5, and run texexec: 

  texexec --paper=a5a4 --print=up yourfile 

will run context untill all refs are sorted out, and then apply a last
pass doing the reshuffel. 

I can add a feature to texexec (--arrange) that does the 'commenting'
(sort of), so that one has full controll in the source. I'll give this
some thought. 

Concerning the manual, we will start uploading soon on a chapter by
chapter base. The first 4 chapters are in typesetting stage (chapter 4
is what you need).

Hm. I would not now. The NTG is preparing a CDROM with all the MAPS
issues as well as all mailing list discussions on lists hosted by the
NTG. So in a few months there will be an archive.

Don't know what that does, but try this to create a A6 book printed on A4:

You could also try to setup A5 on a A4, but this doesn't give you the nice
color-bars, since they reside out of the page boundary.

Install the files into the context base path, and then say (for
instance): 

  texexec --modu  supp-fun.tex

to get the documented module. I still need to document these styles.

the ls -R database), compile the "nl" interface, and run the "texexec
--module" command.  I have a feeling I may be missing some files,
since I find some errors:

These are great!  I am left with a couple of questions:

* What is meant by the part of the page layout called "backspace"?

* What is the meaning of the term "makeup" as in
  "\startstandardmakeup"?

When setting up a layout, the main area of concern is 

  header+text+footer

this makes up the height. 

This area is positioned in the page by topspace and backspace (something
bindingedge). I admit that some english keywords are less typo than some
dutch ones, but alas.  

The width is the width of the typeset area. One can at all points ask
for the \textwidth and the \makeupwidth, these are normally the same,
but when typesetting in 10 columns, the first is is much smaller than
the second.

It sort of reflects that you are doing a manual makeup. It's one page,
actually a vbox similar to the text area. This is often used when making
a title page.

It looks like your modu files are more recent than your context. Are you
sure you have the latest context? In mult-com.tex search for "clip:". 

When you are also running the dutch context (needed indeed for the
documentation) it makes sense to say 

  UsedInterfaces en,nl

in texexec.ini. That way texexec --make generates both formats.

  texshow.pl

this file is in the distribution (and will be updated soon due to some
changes by taco).

Fabrice Popineau made me a perl script launcher: runperl.exe. Copy it to
texshow and texexec and texutil in the same path and it does the job,
with the advantage of long command line arguments.

Ah, reminds me of Berends context for latex users manual ... how far is
that? It makes sense to discuss the differences in page models there.

It's part of the context distrib as 

	 <texmf>/context/perltk/texshow.pl

If you don't have that file, you need to download a newer
context. It's a perl script just like the rest, so you can either
'rename' and 'chmod' and 'mv' it (unix) or create a bat file that
calls 'perl <texmf>\context\perltk\texshow.pl' (windows)

[your] cont-doc.zip probably does not match cont-tmf.zip. Just ignore
this error (which is not really all that important) and/or get a newer
context core distribution.

and \oddsidemargin in latex but using a different approach to do the
needed calculations).

You might have problems getting some of these files though. It seems
the auto-disk dump feature of majordomo occasionally writes files it
can no longer read itself due to special characters in file names.

Probably we should try to set up an automatic HTML bridge to the web,
but with everything being on different machines at different
institutions this is not very straightforward.

absolutely private copy they can get one, but it's missing to much currenly.

No, I don't have the latest context, and the string "clip:" is not in
my mult-com.tex file.  I'm trying to use the teTeX rpms.  

Should I upgrade to the latest version or should I use Taco
Hoekwater's suggestion to ignore the error messages and create an
empty opt file?  I am not as concerned with missing features as bugs:
i.e., I could have the latest context on *my* machine for the
features, with the teTeX rpms on other machines--if bugs are not an
issue.

Well, you could add 

  clip: clip clip clip 

to the command section in mult-com.tex and save yourself the trouble.

Just to make sure I'm following you, are you saying that 2 is done
with the command,

    texexec --pdfarrange --paper=a4a5 --pdf --print=up yourfile.pdf

... ?  I tried that; and I'll refer to this method later as the
"--pdfarrange" method.

I have been playing with this, and it seems to work, but it is has a
much longer execution time compared to, e.g., psbook.

It seems that the "--pdfarrange" method is significantly faster.  Is
that what you'd expect?

I haven't been using documents that have references and lists in my
experiments.  Are you saying that the --pdfarrange method will
generate documents with incorrect indices, references, etc.?

What would be the advantage of the texexec --arrange option versus
putting the pagination commands in the source?

I noticed that a while back Taco Hoekwater posted to the pdftex list a
method that consisted of just directly noodling with the page number
order in the PDF document itself.  You warned that the number of bytes
has to stay the same, but it sounded like it would work.

That wouldn't work in this case, would it?  I'm putting the pages 2
per sheet of paper.

Indeed, but the difference is that here we are dealing with typesetting.
I'm thinking of adding features that act on the spread and so, in which
case psbook is less adequate. Another advantage of the tex method is
that is is pretty save on colors.

Sure, because here we only copy already typeset stuff. Both have their
pros and cons.

No, but it will definitely loose all annotations. This no problem
because we're dealing with printed matter. In general, pdf inclusions
will loose annotations (there was a time distiller included them, which
could give nice effects: cropboxes migrating from illustrations to the
main document). 

This is one reason why we for instance wrote the flowchart module. That
way we could add hyperlinks in cells (and more) which isnearly
impossible with imported graphics. Expect more of this stuff in
context.

It saves you commenting the arrangement out when doing normal runs,
although you could say: 

\startmode[arrange]

  all kind of setups 

\stopmode

... and for the final run: 

  texexec --mode=arrange --once 

etc etc. (It's not the easiest context things you've started with)

Very dangerous, when 3 changes into 40 and 40 into 3 thereis a big
change that many objects have pointers one off.
