There seems to be a bug in the treatment of alignat 
\begin{alignat}{1}
xy&z
\end{alignat}

outputs
1xyz

where the argument 1 is ignored and take as part of the body.  I am 
compiling with flags  `--mathjax -f latex`

If I wrap the same alignat environment with math delimeters \[ and \], then 
it behaves as expected and the argument {1} is processed correctly. 

One possibility is that pandoc does not send alignat to mathjax unless \[ 
and \] are specified.  This seems too obvious though and I imagine it would 
have been caught.  

Any thoughts?

I should add, of course this problem can be circumvented by using the math 
delimiters but then latex code is broken, because latex does not like 
alignat to be inside the math environment.
