I believe John liked the serif at the top because it makes the "hidden pi" stand out. Also, I think having it look somewhat like (or at least evoke the impression of) the pilcrow is part of the charm --- it makes one think of "paragraph", which pandoc works a lot with :). Finally, I think one thing to watch out for is the glyph looking too much like "TP" (Mina and Asul) or "IP" (Quando).
