The simple pandoc epubs I generated and displayed on my old Hanvon              
Reader and the Geeksphone looked just fine.                                     
Even the math is ok. Sure I would prefer SVG math, but it was quite readable.   
For plain text I don't see why the "pure ePub" is a problem.
