I'm thinking about this: in printed books, the usually aren't horizontal 
rules like the ones the latex writer uses.

I usually see a centered 
[asterism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asterism_(typography)) or just 
three asterisks.

Have you thought about this?

We could define a macro in the default template and use
that, to allow greater customization.  A drawback is that
it makes the standard LaTeX output less portable.

You mean... the latex output without --standalone. (I had to think about
this, I don't usually omit that option)

Should we think about a command line option? like
--hr=line|asterisks|asterism|custom_string or even checking if something is
defined among metadata (but then, I don't know if the writer can access
metadata)?
