Hi. Pandoc is amazing but our client needs more control over the Word
output. For example, list styles would need to have their own style name.
Presently the output puts everything as Normal or Body Text. Is there a way
that the higher elements can be taken into account for the style.
For example: *<itemizedlist><listitem><para>Descriptions are based *
Now just is Block Text or Normal. If it was "listitem" it would be much
better. Or even calling it "bullet" or "step" would be helpful. Then the
doc can be formatted much easier later.

Have I missed anything?

The Docbook was created from Paligo.

Thx a bunch,
Steve Wiseman

Are you saying that pandoc is not translating an
itemizedlist in docbook as a list in Word? Or am I
misunderstanding? In any case, please give a small example
to reproduce, and let us know what version of pandoc you're
using.

Hi John,

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

The styles are translating as numbered lists. That is not the issue. The general output is OK. But, let's say you now want to produce the document professionally. The user case is the customer creates the technical documents in Paligo (docbook) - makes their HTML and PDF from there. Their OEMs want the content in Word so we need to use Pandoc for that. They want a professional output that they can modify as needed. So let's say they want the bullets to be 1.5 spaces and a normal paragraph to only be be 1 space between paragraphs, we can't do it with the Pandoc output. The bullets come out as Normal or Block Text (and I can't tell anyway when it's one or the other).

I have attached 2 small docs (docx and xml). I don't know if you allow attachments. If not, here's a link to the files - https://mega.nz/#F!xVtm1IIS!4kVAz3_gb6MrHFMU-upXlQ.

I have marked the Word document with some comments in yellow.

Your conversion is good. It's just it would be much more helpful to provide more unique styles that can be modified. If you know a style is in a list, then give a List style. If you know a paragraph is in a table, give a para style for a table such as TableNormal. If a bullet is in a table, give TableBullet, etc. This is how professional Word documents are created. Also the same for indents. Then the author has complete flexibility of changing the document and any part of it. In Docbook you have all this information in the XML.

OK, that helps. Currently the dev version uses Compact
style for paragraphs in compact lists and Normal for
paragraphs in loose lists. So your suggestion would
be to define a new style, something like CompactList
and NormalList? These would inherit from Compact and
Normal but could be customized.

I'm not sure what other combinations would be needed.
You mention tables, but what happens when you have,
e.g. a list in a table? Surely "professional Word"
doesn't define unique styles for every possible
permutation?

SW: I just want to say I think Pandoc is superb. Just suggesting improvements that would help me, and maybe others.

OK, that helps. Currently the dev version uses Compact style for paragraphs in compact lists and Normal for paragraphs in loose lists. So your suggestion would be to define a new style, something like CompactList and NormalList? These would inherit from Compact and Normal but could be customized.
[SW:] Precisely. But if there was a second indented list, maybe also do NormalList2 for example. Or a paragraph under a bullet, call NormalListPara. That's how I have built my Word files in past.

I'm not sure what other combinations would be needed.
You mention tables, but what happens when you have, e.g. a list in a table? Surely "professional Word"
doesn't define unique styles for every possible permutation?
[SW:] Word allows you to create as many styles as you like. So you can have TableNormal, Table Bullet as well.
It's gray line between where you need multiple styles and it becomes overkill.

I have worked something like this in the past if it helps. If you were writing in Word, and you have all the styles below defined, it's much easier to make the documents consistent (as much as Word allows that).

Normal
Body (Body is better than Normal as Word sometimes can do strange things with the default Normal style)
* bullet
   bulletInd
   * bullet2
      cullet2Ind
1. List
    ListInd
    2. List2
       List2Ind
TableHead
TableBody
* TableBullet
   TableBulletInd
1. TableList
    TableListInd
Code
  CodeInd
    CodeInd2
NoteHeader
NoteBody
* NoteBullet
1. NoteList

Not yet. My initial reaction is that, in order to handle all the possible combinations, we'd need a huge number of individual styles. Not sure I want to go there. Too bad Word doesn't have "cascading" styles.

Hi John,

Joining late to this conversation. I appreciate the size of the challenge
discussed, but I for one would love it if we just got unique styles for
bulleted and numbered lists so these styles could be customised using
the reference-docx switch.

My requirement is for conversion from markdown to Docx and I need to have
"- bullet" in markdown converted to a customised style in the docx file.

I know the OP was hoping for more, but I'd take this small improvement in a
heartbeat if offered.

Cheers

Anthony

I agree. Even just using word's default list style ("List Paragraph" in
English) would be helpful for me.
