Converting RTL script from markdown to docx

Hello all,

 I'm trying to convert a Hebrew markdown file to docx. The results are 
mostly fine, any **bolds** or *italics* are lost in the conversion.
This doesn't happen if the conversion is ltr, or is on latin text.

For example, if I convert the following to rtl:
**test** **בדיקה**

the result is:
בדיקה *test*

Using the style inspector, it appears the bold styling is only applied to 
latin (while Hebrew is complex).

Anyone else encountered this? I've tried setting the mainfont to Arial, 
which has good Hebrew support, but the issue persists.

Judging by the location of the paragraph mark, the direction isn't set to 
rtl. The problem only occurs when I change the direction.
I'm using this command:

pandoc test.md -f markdown -t docx -o test.docx -M dir=rtl 
--reference-doc=custom-reference.docx

That’s funny.
If I use you’re command (without the reference doc), the result is this:

[cid:image001.png-QcfrdMj/5X2ggbM+RQxDGTRmByFHzeGd@public.gmane.org]

Although “bold” is selected, the text does not appear in bold, neither the Latin nor the Hebrew.

Hello all,

 I'm trying to convert a Hebrew markdown file to docx. The results are mostly fine, any **bolds** or *italics* are lost in the conversion.
This doesn't happen if the conversion is ltr, or is on latin text.

For example, if I convert the following to rtl:
**test** **בדיקה**

the result is:
בדיקה test

Using the style inspector, it appears the bold styling is only applied to latin (while Hebrew is complex).

Anyone else encountered this? I've tried setting the mainfont to Arial, which has good Hebrew support, but the issue persists.

After further investigation, the difference between my observed results to 
those of Denis is that I was working with Word 2013. When I tried the same 
on a machine running Word 2019, I got the same results as Denis. 

Opening the font pane, I see that Latin text is defined as bold, but not 
complex script:

In my mind, both complex scripts and Latin text should be set to bold.
Seems like a bug to me. Should I open an issue on Github?

We boldface things by putting them in the `<w:b>` element;
Hebrew and latin text should not differ in how we're
treating them.

Unless something is wrong in our default style?

Hey John,

Looking into a Word file with bolded Hebrew text, bold for complex script 
is tagged as* <w:bCs>* . *Cs* most likely stands for complex script. The 
<w:b> tag also appears, Word applies both when bolding complex script.
I'm opening an issue on Github.

To clarify the distinction between the word versions:

   - In Word 2013, bold is retained on Latin characters.
   - In Word 2019, bold is not retained at all.

My deduction is that in Word 2013, Latin text is treated as such even when 
in an RTL environment, while in 2019, when writing in RTL all text is 
considered complex script.
