Thanks for your response. I guess you're right, there is probably some broken code. It's a very large document that I cannot easily share. I'll try to break it up to narrow down the issue and create a minimum reproducible example as you suggest.

At the risk of annoying you LaTeX experts, the problem is, as I have expressed before, that LaTeX is a truly awful language.Which resonates deeply with my personal feelings about latex.Could you please share a minimal reproducible example (MRE) or the document you are working on?My guess is that you have somehow produced broken tex code, but I'm not sure how.
