I know I am a bit late ...

For me It looks too much like a reference for me. So it appears a bit
confusing.
In my Wortsammler application (e.g.
https://github.com/bwl21/wortsammler/wiki/wortsammler-syntax#eingebettete-grafiken)
I decided to use the striketrough markup for this. If a processor does not
support the syntax, it will simply appear as strikethrough. In this case I
loose the strikethrough which is not used in my documents either.

My preferences would be
1. surround-marking
2. side-marking
3. indent-marking - I dislike that so much that I even won't call this an
alternative
in Wortsammler, i use fenced code blocks for this.
for example to embed plantuml:
~~~~ {.plantuml}
@startuml authentification.png
Alice -> Bob: Authentication Request
Bob --> Alice: Authentication Response
@enduml
~~~~
![Authentification](authentification.png)
But the use case might be a bit different, since I am using a specific
processor for a specifiic syntax in the code block.
I guess the intended DIV would still be regular markup.
I'm eager to hear thoughts about these proposals.
