Are there pandoc options to turn a markdown file with \$ Latex \$
into one that gist.github will display ?
Sorry if this is a duplicate or silly; there's a long back-and-forth 
    https://github.com/github/markup/issues/897
with no simple answer (as far as I can see).

If not, recommendations for another web site that can do markdown with 
math, code, images
would be welcome.

GitHub Pages can either host plain HTML (which you can generate with pandoc 
--mathjax), alternatively GitHub pages uses Jekyll by default to render 
markdown, which supports Math... see e.g. https://jekyllrb.com/docs/extras/

Thanks mb21-- but I'd like gist.github if possible, simpler (for me).
Also the jekyll link says "LaTeX to PNG rendering ..." --
does that mean a .png per LaTeX snippet ? sounds hacky

So you mean you want to release a gist on GitHub that has rendered Math, correct?

If so, in pandoc, use `-t gfm —webtex`. The later option convert your math into an image with a URL pointing to codecogs to render it as a png (or svg if you choose to).

    -o downhill-class.gfm \
    downhill-class.md
Unknown option -—.   (minus minus)

no =url gives the same error
pandoc 2.0.3

I noticed that after I sent the message: my iPad auto-convert `--` into the 
en-dash `–`. (I disabled it right after that message.)

It seems that it works for you now. Next time, you may want to use the User 
Guide at <http://pandoc.org/MANUAL.html> to double check. I (and I guess 
many others here as well) often reply to a thread here from memory. So we 
might occasionally has some typo here and there (e.g. I might have 
misspelled `header-include`, where it might have an `s` in the end, but 
often I'm lazy to check this.)

Actually, looking at the excellent doc, "-t gfm -webtex" doesn't seem right:

http://pandoc.org/MANUAL.html#math
    -t gfm markdown output: "verbatim between $ characters"  
    i.e a no-op, which is about what I get

http://pandoc.org/MANUAL.html#math-rendering-in-html
    -webtex is for -t html 
    and gist.github does not render html. 
    (Seems that gh-pages does, but looks horrible -- need a very simple 
recipe)
    
Or have I misunderstood ? very likely

Actually, --webtex does work for markdown output, but it
seems it doesn't work for gfm.  We could change that.
(Submit a bug report?  Also, we should document that
--webtex works for markdown.)

For now you may try -t markdown_github --webtex.

The reason it (should) works is because --webtex would simply change the 
math to an URL pointing to codecogs for rendering. I’ve tried -t 
markdown_github --webtex so it should works. The reason -t gfm didn’t work 
yet is that it is a new parser that’s fully compatible with GitHub’s, but 
is very new.
