I cannot figure out why I am able to center "Heading 1" over the A and B 
columns but not "Heading 2" over the C and D columns:

I'm attaching the output (not sure how else to include it here). But you 
can see what I mean if you copy/paste the above into pandoc.org/try, and 
then process with: 

pandoc --from markdown --to latex --standalone --no-highlight
