md to pdf only works as root

md to pdf only works as root

when I run: pandoc test.md -o test.pdf 
I get this error:

lstat(./pdflatex) failed ...
./pdflatex: No such file or directory
pdflatex: ../../../texk/kpathsea/progname.c:316: remove_dots: Assertion 
`ret' failed.

pandoc: Error producing PDF

When I run with sudo, it works properly. I do not want to run it as root 
all the time.

What does "which pdflatex" say?

Can you use it on its own to convert a .tex file to .pdf?

"which pdflatex" says "pdflatex: aliased to /usr/bin/pdflatex"

when converting a .tex to a .pdf I get the same error

It's an alias? Maybe you've got a a bad alias then; what is the output
of "alias"?
