It works in lists, but only there, and only with the `task_lists`
extension enabled:

    % echo '- [x] do it' | pandoc -f markdown+task_lists
    <ul class="task-list">
    <li><input type="checkbox" disabled="" checked="" />do it</li>
    </ul>
