I've worked on this a bit and managed to work it out. Definitely my fault 
here.

One thing I'm still trying to work out is if there are any tools for 
configuring table styles. It'd be good to be able to set a default table 
style rather than the one hardcoded into pandoc.
Is learning how to write a filter the only way to to this?
