Subject: Issue creating document from yml file and template in newer pandoc

I had an ubuntu version that I assume had an outdated pandoc. After
changing to manjaro
this project has stopped working for me
https://github.com/mrzool/invoice-boilerplate
with the error

pandoc details.yml -o output.pdf --template=template.tex
--pdf-engine=xelatex
[WARNING] Could not deduce format from file extension .yml

and then a fail after trying to transform the yml file to pdf. Is the demos
https://pandoc.org/demos.html seems that the syntax is correct (I know that
before it worked) but now it seems to be broken.

My pandoc version is

pandoc 2.14.0.2
Compiled with pandoc-types 1.22, texmath 0.12.3, skylighting 0.10.5.1,
citeproc 0.4.0.1, ipynb 0.1.0.1

Is there a new way of doing this(taking metadata for a template from yml
and creating a pdf)?
