Thank you Joost! I managed to miss the part about line blocks even though
I've been looking for the ways to properly present verse in markdown for
some time. It's of course exactly what I need.

Although your suggestion solves it for me, the point about the weirdness
with hard line breaks still stands if anyone's willing to dig deeper into
it.

Thanks again

Any reason you don't want to use line blocks? Type-setting verse
is one of their stated purposes.

[-- Attachment #1.1: Type: text/plain, Size: 2342 bytes --]

Hello guys,

I'm trying to generate a properly-formatted epub out of a markdown file and
have encountered a strange condition. I have blocks of poetry inside the
book which I'm trying to format not as paragraphs but as blocks with hard
breaks to avoid the visual mess.

So far the markdown of my great book looks like this:

#Great <tg://search_hashtag?hashtag=Great> Book

Text in the first paragraph

\
_This where_\
_several lines of poetry would go_\
_which we need to format_\
_in a special way and without paragraph indents_\
\

And another paragraph follows.

And another yet.

However, when I try to convert it using pandoc -o out.epub source.txt I get
the following markup:

<h1>Great Book</h1>

<p>Text in the first paragraph</p>

<p><br/>
<em>This where</em><br/>
<em>several lines of poetry would go</em><br/>
<em>which we need to format</em><br/>
<em>in a special way and without paragraph indents</em><br/>
<br/>
And another paragraph follows.</p>

<p>And another yet.</p>

So the the first line of poetry is actually a good enough tradeoff because
I need to get rid of indentation, hence the empty line followed by a line
with a single "\". What bothers me is that the new paragraph right after
the poetry ends doesn't get the proper <p> treatment until the paragraph
*after it* which breaks my formatting across the book. Obviously the </p>
should occur after the last line of poetry. And taking out the ending "\"
on a line by itself makes the matters even worse.

Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong with the markdown?
Unfortunately I know of no other better way to include poetry in markdown,
the other two less viable alternatives are to use pre/code blocks (which
work) and a dedicated html markup inside the text file.

Thanks
